Furnace repair from LMH is a call away!
  • First, ensure that your entire heat pump system has power.
    • Make sure your "FURNACE SWITCH" is set to "ON". This switch is typically a traditional toggle switch that may have a RED cover-plate.
    • Check your circuit breaker on your electric panel for both you air handler / furnace, and your outdoor unit to ensure that neither of these breakers has tripped.
    • Check the electric disconnect that is typically mounted next to your outdoor unit to make sure that it is "ON".
  • Then check your thermostat.
    • For cooling make sure your thermostat is "ON", is set to "COOL", and the desired room temperature is set lower than the current ambient temperature.
    • For heating, verify that your thermostat is "ON", is set to "HEAT", and the desired room temperature is set higher than the current ambient temperature.
    • If your thermostat has a battery, change it now.
  • Now check for indoor airflow issues: Poor indoor airflow can cause serious performance issues
    • Is your furnace or air handler filter clean? Change your furnace filter and re-start your system.
    • Check your duct system inlets and outlets. Are almost all open and clear of obstructions?
    • In AC mode, is there a heavy accumulation of ice or frost on the refrigerant lines near the indoor coil? This can indicate improper airflow.
  • Other things to consider:
    • If your thermostat or the system power was off, after turning the system on give it a few minutes; many AC systems have a time-delay function on start-up.
    • If your system is blowing cool air (in cooling), but not cooling as well as it should, check your outdoor unit to ensure there is nothing blocking airflow through the outdoor coil. In heating mode, the same issue can occur: the blower is on, but the air coming from the registers in not warm enough. PLEASE NOTE: Be very careful not to damage the fines on your outdoor coil and call us if you need help!
    • Defrost: In heating, your outdoor unit has a defrost function. During defrost, the indoor blower pauses, and the outdoor unit operates in defrost mode to clear the outdoor coil of ice or frost. This can take up to 15 minutes to complete, so be patient.

    • If the system is undersized, in extreme weather interior temperatures will not be able to maintained.
    • More commonly, if a system is short cycling without proper dehumidification in cooling mode it is probably too big.

  • Condensate Problems: Water accumulating below your air handler because of an improperly designed drain connection.

  • Thermostat not working properly: Improper programming or wiring problems.

  • Age Related Component Failures:
    • Breaker Trips: Breaker to the outdoor has unit tripped more than once potentially indicating improper wiring or potential compressor, fan motor, or capacitor failures.
